What You’ll Need for a Game of 4 Square

With a set of our playground markings in place, a game of 4 Square is easy to start. All you really need is a bouncy ball. However, you can also set out temporary markers such as cones if you want your students to stand a certain distance away from where play is happening. Safety and organisation are key!

Number of Players

Four players are needed to start, with each player occupying one of the numbered squares on the court (1 through 4). If you’ve got a larger group than this, additional players can wait in line to rotate in when someone is eliminated.

Getting Started With the Game

The primary goal of Four Square is to remain in play by bouncing the ball into another player’s square without breaking the rules. Players aim to advance to the top square (Square 1) while avoiding elimination.

Basic Gameplay

Starting the Game:

The player in Square 1 begins by serving the ball, bouncing it once in their own square before hitting it into another square. The serve must be underhand and controlled to ensure fair play.

Keeping the Ball in Play:

Players take turns hitting the ball into another square, ensuring it bounces only once before reaching the other player’s square. The ball must stay within the boundaries of the 4 Square court.

Eliminating a Player:

A player is out if they:

• Fail to hit the ball into another square.
• Let the ball bounce more than once in their own square.
• Hit the ball out of bounds.
• Use an illegal move, such as carrying the ball instead of hitting it.

Rotation:

When a player is eliminated, they leave the court, and all other players move up to fill the empty square. A new player from the line joins in Square 4.
