A Simple Set of Rules for Your Students

Also known as Tic-Tac-Toe, Noughts and Crosses is easy and can engage students of any age. To start, all you need is a 3×3 grid – like the one we’ll permanently install on your playground – and something to mark the grid with. In the case of our markings, this should be a piece of chalk.

Once you’ve set up, you’ll need two players. One will take the role of ‘Noughts’ (O) and the other will take ‘Crosses’ (X). Players take turns placing their respective symbol (X or O) in one of the nine squares on the grid. The winner is the first player to get three symbols in a straight line, horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

If all squares are filled without any player achieving three in a row, the game is considered a draw.

How You Can Encourage Versatile Gameplay

There isn’t one set way students can enjoy a game of Noughts and Crosses. You can show them that they can play it:

• In Pairs: The traditional two-player format is perfect for encouraging friendly competition between classmates. It’s an excellent way for students to practise taking turns and respecting each other’s moves, helping them to understand forming a partnership even when playing against each other.
• In Small Teams: For a twist on the classic game, consider encouraging kids to play in small teams. Each team can discuss and agree on their next move together, fostering a sense of community, collaboration, and collective decision-making.
